Having met Ray Edwards and Lisa Duncan at the Douglas Bader Rehabilitation Unit of Queen Mary's Hospital some time ago, I became very impressed by his determination and her professionalism. Lisa is going along with Ray as part of his support group to enable him to climb the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2010.
So impressed was I that I determined to do something about fund raising to help these two with their ambition. They kindly gave me permission to organise a 'Silent' auction with canapes and wine. I booked St Mary's Church Hall in Putney for 12th February and then set about encouraging local businesses to donate goods for the "Silent' auction that we planned to take place there. Coincidentally I met Amy Williams at a 60th Birthday party in November and she offered to help me organise this event. She was entirely responsible for organising the brochure of 'lots' we had to auction, and produced a really professional publication which was distributed amongst all our attendees on the evening. We had over 55 different items given to us for our auction - all we then needed to do was to sell tickets for the event, organise a caterer who would provide canapes ( based on estimated numbers ) and whip up enthusiasm amongst our friends and families. Ultimately the evening proved to be a huge success- due in large part to the enormous enthusiasm with which Ray approached our project. He circulated easily amongst the 100 guests who attended, and promoted the Limbless Association and it's good works. He was the star attraction and incorporated a marvellous sense of humour to the evening. The auction was hugely successful too - not a single 'lot' remained unsold, and in the process of selling tickets for the event, we picked up almost £700 in donations from those who couldn't attend. In total we collected in excess of £5,700 which thrilled us to bits. And we had a good time in the process. A dear friend, a photographer, took countless photographs, which serve to be a great souvenir of a marvellous evening. www.kennyhickey-photography.co.uk We wish them well for their forthcoming trip and every success in fulfilling their dreams.
