“One often learns more from ten days of agony
than from ten years of contentment.”
Merle Shain

I have very much enjoyed working as a physiotherapist with amputees in London for 15 years, helping them to return to independence and achieving their goals. My work is both very rewarding and at times challenging. Personally  I like to take up challenges in life.  These have included an 8 1/2 month trans-Africa journey overland, a tandem sky dive, bunjee jumping and white water rafting on the mighty Zambezi!   I have been very fortunate in my work to meet some truly inspirational and wonderful people overcoming a great life change and adjusting to limb loss.  Setting my own personal goal, this year, I feel privileged to support and accompany Ray Edwards, a quad amputee in the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa in aid of the Limbless Association charity.
In 1987 Ray lost both his legs below the knee and both his arms below the elbow. He is an inspirational man and it was meeting him in December 2009 which has led me to join the Kili challenge...   One of the amputees joining me in this challenge is Terry (pictured right), who I rehabilitated at Charing Cross Hospital after he lost his leg below the knee. I feel proud to have taken a part in Terry’s rehabilitation which meant he returned to independent walking, work, travelling and now to join me in our attempt at conquering Kili! We are all currently in the process of training and preparing for our challenge ahead, with some intrepidation! Plans ahead for me include joining some of the group members for walking and camping in Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons, walking as much as possible with my friends and family and hours in the gym and pool...
With days and days (about 10 days), hours and hours of hiking and a summit of 5,895 metres, no doubt this will be the hardest physical and mental challenge I have undertaken in life so far, particularly with my history of blisters! I have decided to take a mascot bear up the mountain, “Beano” bear, who will hopefully be featuring in some of the photos!
Each individual in the group has taken up the challenge of raising £4000.00. Some of my fund raising efforts include producing a recipe book, car boot sales, naming the bear and an evening Bollywood event taking place on Saturday 17th July 2010! If you are interested in coming along to the Bollywood night then please do contact me on: lausieburgess@hotmail.com or click on the banner below for more details. If you want to help with my fund raising then please do follow the link and use my JustGiving page or alternatively send a cheque made payable to the “Limbless Association” to Laura Burgess, Holderness Rehabilitation Centre, Fulham Palace Road, London W6 8RF.
